The inside story on Art Deco

A new book on French Art Deco master Jacques Emile Ruhlmann is reviewed in the following article in the Wall Street Journal by David Netto.  In the 1920’s and 30’s, leaders in design, especially in furniture-making, were celebrated as national heroes in France, in much the same way as a soldier or an athlete is celebrated in the modern world. This article and the book frame the context of such elevation of design in the national psyche, and also the man whose name is synonymous with “the second coming of a golden age of French decorative arts“.
